If you are moving long-distance this summer, and you are planning on shipping one or more vehicles to your final destination, there are a few things that you need to do to get your vehicle ready for the shipping process.

1. Remove All Personal Items

Your car is not a storage closet; do not try to ship your car with items packaged inside of it. When you ship a car, the carrier is going to ask you to ship the car without any items inside of it.

This ensures that the weight of your vehicle is consistent. Keeping your vehicle clear of items also ensures that whoever is towing or transporting your vehicle has a clear line of sight through your vehicle.

Additionally, your belongings can easily bounce and move around during transportation. It is not the safest way to transport items. Finally, if you leave items inside of your vehicle, you are not going to be able to use those items till you get your car at your destination, so you don't want to leave items that you need to use like sunglasses, CDs, or medication inside of your vehicle.

2. Get the Gas Low

Next, you are going to want to make sure that you keep the gas low in your vehicle. Your vehicle needs a little bit of gas in it so that the transporters can move your vehicle around. However, you don't want to have a full tank of gas sloshing around in your vehicle when it is being transported either.

It is a good idea to leave your vehicle at a quarter of a tank when you will be shipping it. Be sure to confirm this requirement with the shipping carrier you will be using.

3. Take Photos of Your Vehicle

Before your vehicle is shipped, take photos of your vehicle. Be sure to take photos that show each body panel on your vehicle in detail. Take lots of photos from different angles, and use the time-stamp features on your phone or camera for these photos. That way, you can show when you took the photos as well. Take pictures of the inside of your vehicles as well.

The chance that your vehicle will be damaged in the shipping process is extremely low, but having photos of your vehicle is a smart backup move in case your vehicle is the except and is damaged somehow during the shipping process. Photos will help both you and the shipping carrier determine what the damage was and when it occurred so the damage and the event that caused it can both be addressed.

If you are going to be shipping your vehicle this year, be sure to remove all items from your car and don't use it as a storage space. Make sure that there is only a quarter tank or so of gas left in your vehicle. Finally, take photos of your vehicle before you ship it and when you pick it up to ensure that it didn't sustain any body damage during the move. Shipping a car is a safe way to move your vehicle a long distance without the stress of driving all of your vehicles to your new home.
