If you have worked in the shipping industry before but are currently unemployed, you may be wondering how you can get another job again. Shipping fleet jobs wax and wan like the moon, and you have to know just when to apply and to whom you should apply. Here are some tips on how to land a fleet job based on the specific time of year and employers who will be looking for experienced candidates like you.

Christmas Season

Without a doubt, the best time of year to apply for a shipping job is during the Christmas season. In fact, applying for a shipping and fleet job a few months before the end-of-year holiday season is even better. Most employees who are hired in September and October enjoy "seniority" status over those that are hired in November and December and will therefore have better job security than those hired in the last two months of the year. It is during this time the biggest number of cards and packages are shipped, and shipping companies will need a lot of extra help to get everything delivered on time.

Valentine's Day to Easter

In what is possibly the second busiest time of the year, the post office and several other shipping companies are processing thousands of Valentine's Day cards and gifts, Easter cards and even tax forms for tax season. (Some people still file paper forms because they do not trust the Internet to keep their financial information secure or they do not know how to file electronically.) With millions of Americans sending cards and gifts and hundreds of thousands still filing paper tax forms, the U.S. Post Office and their shipping and mailing competitors hire more people to help with the heavy load.

Available Fleet and Shipping Jobs

As long as you do not have your heart set on driving a delivery truck, you can get your foot in the door at any of the four major (and most recognized) package and letter shipping companies. You will be on the docks or in the plants processing and scanning tons of mail, packages and oversized items that do not have a shipping box big enough to hold them. In some shipping companies, you can move up to driving a fleet truck after you have worked in the plant for a while. If you got a job with the post office, you might be driving a delivery truck or your own car as a delivery vehicle right away and then work your way back into the office as a desk clerk or postmaster. Most of the entry jobs are available during the two heaviest shipping times of the year.
